FIND THE LORD, THE SAVIOR

FIND THE LORD, THE SAVIOR
Jesus sees the multitude coming to Him. It is not a multitude, but a people hungry for the natural food and also for the spiritual; a multitude of sufferers and unbelievers at the same time. In the synoptic, Jesus sees and has compassion, here, Jo quotes only the initiative of Jesus and the certainty of what he should do. In the Synoptics, it is the disciples who take the initiative. The Johannine accent is tremendously Christological both in the initiative of action and in the way of understanding what was happening with that people. In Jo it is the disciples who prepare the multitude, but it is Jesus who gives him to eat. The disciples prepare, and Jesus grants the grace of saving food. One important fact is that the crowd is COMING TO JESUS. This "coming to Jesus" also indicates, in the present day, the people who seek the house of God untiringly, in an attempt to be satisfied with their needs and who must find the disciples of Jesus willing to grant him the essential food. The people continue to "come to Jesus." The question is whether the disciples are actually actually with Him and for Him.
3. Jo brings to this text two important things: a reference to Jewish Passover and a reference to supper. In fact, the way it is narrated recalls the Eucharistic celebration, which was already celebrated before the Johannine writing. What was already lived by the Christian community is quoted in the text. The liturgy precedes the writing of the New Testament. When it is mentioned, for example, the care with the leftovers of the loaves, it reminds much the care due to the leftovers of the eucharistic particles. The number 12 recalls wholeness, wholeness, and universality. In this sense, the remaining 12 baskets indicate that this food is for everyone.
4. The people did not understand the sign. No one doubts the action of Jesus, but it does not reach its true meaning. That is the big problem. In experiencing this event, the people immediately linked Jesus to the Messianic idea of Israel, but not in the way Jesus understood it. The people wanted Jesus king of Israel, a powerful politician, the liberator of those people. The political hope of liberation eclipsed the true quest for the inner liberation of humanity. To want Jesus as a political liberator is to opt for the continuity of the old, rational man, the son of worldly illusions. Jesus wants each one, without fear, to seek Him as the Deliverer, the One who frees from sin, who offers new life, even in pain, in daily suffering; He who offers the true life: eternal life; He who liberates socially, but as a consequence of a converted life, changed according to his grace and his love; He who requires, first of all, that man turns first to God and, because of God, for the greater good of the other, his brother.
A strong and affectionate hug.
