From all my fears the Lord God delivered me.

1. I will bless the Lord God at all times, / his praise will always be in my mouth. / My soul makes its boast in the Lord; / let the humble hear and rejoice! – R.

2. With me, magnify the Lord God, / let us all together exalt his name! / Every time I looked for him, he listened / and from all my fears he delivered me. – R.

3. Contemplate his face and rejoice, / and your face is not covered with shame! / This wretch cried out to God and was heard, / and the Lord freed him from all anguish. – R.

4. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and saves them. / Taste and see how gentle the Lord is! / Happy the man who has in Him his refuge! – R.

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 4,6-8.17-18

Reading from São Paulo's second letter to Timothy - Dearly beloved, 6 as for me, I am already about to be poured out in sacrifice; The moment of my departure is approaching. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, righteous judge, will give me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who await with love his glorious manifestation. 17But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, he made the message fully proclaimed by me and heard by all nations; and I was delivered from the lion's mouth. 18 The Lord will deliver me from all evil and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory, forever and ever! Amen. - Word of the Lord.

Gospel: Matthew 16,13-19

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah.

You are Peter and on this rock / I will build my Church; / and the gates of hell / will not defeat it (Mt 16,18). – R.

Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew - At that time, 13 Jesus went to the region of Caesarea Philippi and there he asked his disciples: "Who do men say that the Son of Man is?" 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others, that it is Elijah; still others, that it is Jeremiah or one of the prophets”. 15Then Jesus asked them, “And you, who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." 17 Answering, Jesus said to him, ′′ Happy are you, Simon, son of Jonah, because it was not a human being who revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 Therefore I tell you that you are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church, and the power of hell will never be able to overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven: whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” - Word of salvation.

A fisherman from Galilee, Simon Peter responds to the call of Jesus, who soon gives him the nickname Cephas (rock, stone) and makes him responsible for the group of disciples (Church). After the ascension of Jesus, Peter takes over the leadership of the community in Jerusalem. He is the first to recognize the need to open the Church to non-Jews as well. In Rome, he suffered martyrdom around the year 64. From persecutor of Christians to apostle of Christ, Paul was the first great missionary of the Church (four great apostolic journeys). He evangelized mainly non-Jewish peoples. He founded several communities. He wrote some letters with deep theological themes and pastoral orientations. He suffered martyrdom in Rome in the year 67. Peter and Paul are considered cornerstones of the Christian faith.
