The Lord speaks of peace to his people and to his friends and to all who turn to him

The oppression of the powerful does not last forever; its limited duration fills with hope and reinforces the fidelity of those who believe in God. In difficult times, let us call on the Lord with greater insistence and deeper faith, so that he may preserve us from all deception.

Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Luke – At that time, 5some people commented on the temple, which was decorated with beautiful stones and votive offerings. Jesus said: 6“Do you admire these things? Days will come when no stone will be left unturned. Everything will be destroyed.” 7But they asked, “Master, when will this happen? And what will be the sign that these things are about to happen?” 8Jesus replied, “Be careful not to be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘It is I!’ And again, ‘The time is near.’ Don't follow these people! 9When you hear about wars and revolutions, do not be terrified. These things need to happen first, but it won’t be the end soon.” 10And Jesus continued: “People will rise up against people, one country will attack another country. 11There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in many places; fearful things will happen and great signs will be seen in the sky.” – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

The temple's grandeur offers security to religious leaders, who continue to be identified with social, political and religious structures. Jesus clarifies that everything will be destroyed; no stone will be left upon another. They then want to know when the destruction will occur. Jesus does not give any date, but warns against the false Messiahs who will arise saying: “It is I… the time is near”. Don't follow these people. With the invasion and capture of Jerusalem by the Romans in the year 70, many thought that the end of the world had come. Jesus clarifies that “it will not be the end soon”. It will be the end of just one phase of history. Jesus expands the speech and warns his disciples that there will always be wars, earthquakes, famine and epidemics, which mark a next phase in the history of humanity.

O Senhor fala de paz a seu povo e a seus amigos e a todos os que se voltam para ele (Sl 84,9).

A opressão dos poderosos não vigora para sempre; sua duração limitada enche de esperança e reforça a fidelidade dos que creem em Deus. Em tempos difíceis, invoquemos o Senhor com maior insistência e fé mais profunda, para que ele nos preserve de todo engano.

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Lucas – Naquele tempo, 5algumas pessoas comentavam a respeito do templo que era enfeitado com belas pedras e com ofertas votivas. Jesus disse: 6“Vós admirais estas coisas? Dias virão em que não ficará pedra sobre pedra. Tudo será destruído”. 7Mas eles perguntaram: “Mestre, quando acontecerá isso? E qual vai ser o sinal de que essas coisas estão para acontecer?” 8Jesus respondeu: “Cuidado para não serdes enganados, porque muitos virão em meu nome, dizendo: ‘Sou eu!’ E ainda: ‘O tempo está próximo’. Não sigais essa gente! 9Quando ouvirdes falar de guerras e revoluções, não fiqueis apavorados. É preciso que essas coisas aconteçam primeiro, mas não será logo o fim”. 10E Jesus continuou: “Um povo se levantará contra outro povo, um país atacará outro país. 11Haverá grandes terremotos, fomes e pestes em muitos lugares; acontecerão coisas pavorosas e grandes sinais serão vistos no céu”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

A imponência do templo oferece segurança aos chefes religiosos, que continuam identificados com as estruturas sociais, políticas e religiosas. Jesus esclarece que tudo será destruído; não restará pedra sobre pedra. Querem então saber quando acontecerá a destruição. Jesus não apresenta nenhuma data, mas adverte contra os falsos Messias que surgirão dizendo: “Sou eu… o tempo está próximo”. Não sigam essa gente. Com a invasão e tomada de Jerusalém pelos romanos no ano 70, muitos pensavam que tinha chegado o fim do mundo. Jesus esclarece que “não será logo o fim”. Será o fim apenas de uma fase da história. Jesus amplia o discurso e adverte seus discípulos de que sempre haverá guerras, terremotos, fome e epidemias, que marcam uma fase seguinte na história da humanidade.
