The Lord encourages us to prepare his paths, so that love and solidarity become, in fact, firmly present realities among us. He is being patient with you, as he does not want anyone to be lost. Proclamation of the holy Gospel according to Mark – 1Beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Son of God. 2It is written in the book of the prophet Isaiah: “Behold, I send my messenger before you, to prepare your way. 3This is the voice of him who cries in the desert: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his roads straight!'” 4This is how John the Baptist appeared in the desert, preaching a baptism of conversion for the forgiveness of sins. 5The whole region of Judea and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem went to meet him. They confessed their sins and John baptized them in the Jordan River. 6John dressed in camel skin and ate locusts and honey from the field. 7And he preached, saying: “One stronger than I will come after me. I'm not even worthy of bending down to untie your sandals. 8I baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” – Word of salvation. Reflection: The first words of Mark's Gospel make it clear who the protagonist of the book is: Jesus Christ, Son of God. The figure of John the Baptist immediately emerges, who reproduces Isaiah's prophecy: “A voice cries out in the desert: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his roads straight'”. Preparing the path of the Messiah is to manifest, through baptism with water, the firm desire to change your life and wait for new times.

O Senhor nos consola em nossas aflições e é paciente conosco. Ele nos revela sua bondade e nos fortalece a esperança de novos céus e nova terra, onde habite a verdadeira justiça. O Senhor nos anime a preparar seus caminhos, para que o amor e a solidariedade se tornem, de fato, realidades firmemente presentes entre nós.

Primeira Leitura: Isaías 40,1-5.9-11

Segunda Leitura: 2 Pedro 3,8-14

Leitura da segunda carta de São Pedro – 8Uma coisa vós não podeis desconhecer, caríssimos: para o Senhor, um dia é como mil anos e mil anos como um dia. 9O Senhor não tarda a cumprir sua promessa, como pensam alguns, achando que demora. Ele está usando de paciência para convosco, pois não deseja que alguém se perca. Ao contrário, quer que todos venham a converter-se. 10O dia do Senhor chegará como um ladrão, e então os céus acabarão com barulho espantoso; os elementos, devorados pelas chamas, se dissolverão, e a terra será consumida com tudo o que nela se fez. 11Se desse modo tudo se vai desintegrar, qual não deve ser o vosso empenho numa vida santa e piedosa, 12enquanto esperais com anseio a vinda do dia de Deus, quando os céus em chama se vão derreter e os elementos, consumidos pelo fogo, se fundirão? 13O que nós esperamos, de acordo com a sua promessa, são novos céus e uma nova terra, onde habitará a justiça. 14Caríssimos, vivendo nessa esperança, esforçai-vos para que ele vos encontre numa vida pura e sem mancha e em paz. – Palavra do Senhor.

Evangelho: Marcos 1,1-8

Preparai o caminho do Senhor; / endireitai suas veredas. / Toda carne há de ver / a salvação do nosso Deus (Lc 3,4.6). – R.

Proclamação do santo Evangelho segundo Marcos – 1Início do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo, Filho de Deus. 2Está escrito no livro do profeta Isaías: “Eis que envio meu mensageiro à tua frente, para preparar o teu caminho. 3Esta é a voz daquele que grita no deserto: ‘Preparai o caminho do Senhor, endireitai suas estradas!'” 4Foi assim que João Batista apareceu no deserto, pregando um batismo de conversão para o perdão dos pecados. 5Toda a região da Judeia e todos os moradores de Jerusalém iam ao seu encontro. Confessavam os seus pecados e João os batizava no rio Jordão. 6João se vestia com uma pele de camelo e comia gafanhotos e mel do campo. 7E pregava, dizendo: “Depois de mim virá alguém mais forte do que eu. Eu nem sou digno de me abaixar para desamarrar suas sandálias. 8Eu vos batizei com água, mas ele vos batizará com o Espírito Santo”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

As primeiras palavras do Evangelho de Marcos deixam claro quem é o protagonista do livro: Jesus Cristo, Filho de Deus. Desponta de imediato a figura de João Batista, que reproduz a profecia de Isaías: “Uma voz grita no deserto: ‘Preparem o caminho do Senhor, endireitem suas estradas'”. Preparar o caminho do Messias é manifestar, pelo batismo com água, a firme vontade de mudar de vida e esperar tempos novos, caracterizados pelo batismo com o Espírito Santo. Endireitar as estradas é criar relações com base na igualdade e na prática da justiça. João Batista não se considera o Messias, é apenas o precursor dele: “Depois de mim, vem aquele que é mais forte do que eu”. Jesus é o Messias, que possui a plenitude do Espírito Santo: “Derramarei o meu Espírito sobre todos os viventes” (Jl 3,1).
