GOD WANTS OUR CONVERSION, THAT WE ACCEPT HIS FATHERLY LOVE AND COMPLETELY TRUST IN HIM.

As for me, may I boast only of the cross of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Through him, the world is crucified to me, as I am crucified to the world (Gal 6:14).

First Reading: Isaiah 41,13-20

Reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah – 13I am the Lord, your God, who takes you by the hand and says to you: “Do not be afraid; I will help you.” 14Do not be afraid, Jacob, poor worm, do not be afraid, men of Israel. Gospel: Matthew 11,11-15

Proclamation of the holy Gospel according to Matthew – At that time, Jesus said to the crowd: 11 “Truly I tell you, of all the men who have ever been born, none is greater than John the Baptist. However, the smallest in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than him. 12From the days of John the Baptist until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has suffered violence, and it is the violent who conquer it. 13Indeed, all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14And if you want to accept it, he is the Elijah who is to come. 15Whoever has ears, let him hear.” – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

According to the mentality of the people, the prophet Elijah, model of all other prophets, should return to prepare the way for the Messiah. Now, John the Baptist is the greatest of the prophets, because he imposes on himself a strict life regime and vigorously announces the need to change his life, through penance and repentance. Despite John's greatness, the least of Jesus' disciples is greater than him, because John belonged to the time of waiting, of preparation, while Jesus belongs to the time of fulfilling the promises. Why does the Kingdom of God suffer violence? Because many, especially the powerful, like Herod, do not accept the coming of Jesus, who proposes and follows a path of liberation and abundant life for all.

Quanto a mim, que eu me glorie somente da cruz de nosso Senhor, Jesus Cristo. Por ele, o mundo está crucificado para mim, como eu estou crucificado para o mundo (Gl 6,14).

Misericórdia e piedade é o Senhor! / Ele é amor, é paciência, é compaixão.

1. Ó meu Deus, quero exaltar-vos, ó meu rei, / e bendizer o vosso nome pelos séculos. / O Senhor é muito bom para com todos, / sua ternura abraça toda criatura. – R.

2. Que vossas obras, ó Senhor, vos glorifiquem, / e os vossos santos com louvores vos bendigam! / Narrem a glória e o esplendor do vosso reino / e saibam proclamar vosso poder! – R.

Evangelho: Mateus 11,11-15

Que os céus, lá do alto, derramem o orvalho, / que chova das nuvens o justo esperado, / que a terra se abra e germine o Senhor! (Is 45,8) – R.

Proclamação do santo Evangelho segundo Mateus – Naquele tempo, disse Jesus à multidão: 11“Em verdade eu vos digo, de todos os homens que já nasceram, nenhum é maior do que João Batista. No entanto, o menor no Reino dos Céus é maior do que ele. 12Desde os dias de João Batista até agora, o Reino dos Céus sofre violência, e são os violentos que o conquistam. 13Com efeito, todos os profetas e a Lei profetizaram até João. 14E se quereis aceitar, ele é o Elias que há de vir. 15Quem tem ouvidos ouça”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

Segundo a mentalidade do povo, o profeta Elias, modelo de todos os outros profetas, devia voltar para preparar o caminho do Messias. Ora, João Batista é o maior dos profetas, porque impõe a si um regime de vida rigoroso e anuncia com vigor a necessidade de mudar de vida, por meio da penitência e do arrependimento. Não obstante a grandeza de João, o menor dos discípulos de Jesus é maior do que ele, porque João pertencia ao tempo da espera, da preparação, ao passo que Jesus pertence ao tempo da realização das promessas. Por que o Reino de Deus sofre violência? Porque muitos, sobretudo os poderosos, como Herodes, não aceitam a vinda de Jesus, que propõe e segue um caminho de libertação e vida abundante para todos.
