Do not abandon me, Lord my God, nor stay far from me! Come to my aid, O Lord, strength of my salvation! (Ps 37,22s)

First Reading: Jeremiah 18,18-20 For Jesus, serving means giving one's life for others: “The Son of Man came… to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah – In those days, 18they said: “Come, let us conspire together against Jeremiah; a priest will not let the law die; nor a wise man, advice; nor a prophet, the word. Come and let us attack him with our tongues, and we will not pay attention to all his words.” 19Listen to me, Lord, hear what my adversaries say. 20Can good be returned for evil? For they dug a grave for me. Remember that I came before you to intercede for them and to try to turn away your anger. - Word of the Lord. Responsorial Psalm: 30(31) Save me by your compassion, O Lord God! 1. Remove me from this treacherous net, / because you are my protective refuge! / Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit, / because you will save me, O faithful God! – R. 2. All things around me terrify me; / I hear many whispering against me; / everyone gathers together, conspiring / and thinking how they are going to take my life. – R. 3. However, to you, O my Lord, I entrust myself / and I affirm that you alone are my God! / I place my destiny in your hands; / free me from the enemy and the oppressor! – R. Gospel: Matthew 20,17-28 Hail, Christ, light of life, / companion in sharing! I am the light of the world; / he who follows me / does not walk in darkness, / but will have the light of life (John 8:12). – R. Proclamation of the holy Gospel according to Matthew - At that time, 17while Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside and, during the walk, said to them: 18“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the high priests and teachers of the Law. They will condemn him to death 19and will hand him over to the pagans to mock him, to scourge him and crucify him. But on the third day he will rise again.” 20The mother of Zebedee's children approached Jesus with her children and knelt down with the intention of making a request. 21Jesus asked, “What do you want?” She replied: “Command that these two sons of mine sit, in your kingdom, one at your right and one at your left.” 22Jesus then answered them, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you perhaps drink the cup that I am going to drink?” They responded, “We can.” 23Then Jesus said to them, “Indeed, you will drink from my cup, but it is not up to me to grant the place at my right or at my left. My Father is the one who will give these places to those for whom he prepared them.” 24When the other ten disciples heard this, they became angry with the two brothers. 25But Jesus called them and said, “You know that the rulers of the nations have power over them and the great ones oppress them. 26It should not be like this among you. Whoever wants to become great must become your servant; 27Whoever wants to be first must be your servant. 28For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Word of salvation.
