At that time, 46 while Jesus was speaking to the crowds, his mother and brothers stood outside, trying to talk to him. 47 Someone said to Jesus, "Look! Your mother and your brothers are outside, and they want to talk to you." 48 Jesus asked the one who had spoken, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" 49 And stretching out his hand to the disciples, Jesus said, "Behold my mother and my brothers. 50 For everyone who does the will of my Father who is in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." — Word of Salvation. Reflection The disciples constitute Jesus' new family. According to biblical reality, a family is built on love, truth, faith, obedience and the appreciation of life. When Jesus teaches, he does so by building a large family obedient to God's will. At that moment, there can be no change of focus, other interests, but only positioning oneself in deeply listening to the announced Word, in the learning necessary for salvation. So, while Jesus speaks to the crowds, it is not the time to introduce extraneous matters or even the interests of the blood family. It is important to know that nothing, no one, and no idea should separate the disciple from his evangelizing mission. On the other hand, here it is not appropriate to reflect on those who see in the text a disregard for the Virgin Mary as Mother. This is not the evangelist's position. The context of this text is not easy because there is a direct rejection of Jesus on the part of the Jewish leaders, who were spreading the word that Jesus was possessed by evil, and also on the part of his relatives, who, due to the fact that they were neither deep in faith nor knowledge of Jesus, and, furthermore, influenced by the leaders of Israel, they were unable to see the presence of God in HIM. They were unable to understand the mystery of the incarnate God, a mystery despised by many, even after the victory of the resurrected Jesus. As for the Virgin Mary, if we want to delve deeper into what Jesus said, no one, after Jesus, was more obedient to the will of the Lord than His Mother. Therefore, Mary would be a Mother in two ways: one because she was in fact, naturally a mother by the will of God, another, for completely doing the will of the Lord. So, in both cases, Mary is linked to Jesus: both in blood ties and in the context of faith. Anyone who seeks this type of reflection, dispensing with Mary, diminishing her, signals a kind of enmity with the Catholic Church and, at the same time, a certain distortion of the Sacred text. It's sad when that happens! The Word of God cannot be used for games of personal interest, but understood according to the same Spirit that inspired it and applied to its true objective desired by God himself. This distortion of the Word unfortunately exists on the part of irresponsible heretics of all times. Here we are talking about a family that has God's will as its foundation. Jesus did not come into the world to be another family member, to live trapped in the mentality of blood ties, to be a great man in history. On the contrary, he came to accomplish the salvation of all. He is the Savior, the one by whom not only was everything created, but also the one by whom all creation was saved. He is the Word of God, the eternal Son, the Way, the Truth and the Life; He is God with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Coming from him, therefore, constitutes the New Time of New Familiarity, which, without denying the importance of consanguinity, has its foundation in FAITH, as total adherence to his person and his work. Jesus was rejected by the institutions of his time. In fact, in society and religion Jesus found no familiarity. Everything for Him was defiance, rejection and indifference from the Jewish leaders, contempt for the project He presented, denial of His entire person until death. In other words, He was not loved by those of the same nationality and religion, nor by many of His relatives. He was aware of his identity, the mission entrusted to him and the Kingdom he announced and which was present in him. At no point did he dispense with his Father's project because of social, religious or even blood ties. In view of this, He constituted disciples, people who would form His new family, the new people of God, His Church, a family based on obedience to the Father's will, dedicated to the saving mission and totally given to the practice of love, with Truth as its foundation. and Life as the supreme objective.
